SHIBUYA SKY: the view from the top

The rooftop of Shibuya Scramble Square has a corner that looks straight down on the crossing, and from 229 m the crowd becomes a pattern. You also get the rest of Tokyo, which none of the other spots can match.

The catch is the ticketing. Every ticket is for a 20-minute entry window and prices rise at 15:00. Nothing may be carried on the roof except a phone or a small camera on a strap: no bags, hats or tripods. Our SHIBUYA SKY guide has the full rules and price table.

If the slots are gone, a tour can help. The Shibuya Walking Tour with SHIBUYA SKY Admission includes the ticket, which the operator books when sales open two weeks ahead. Other options are on our tours page.

MAGNET by SHIBUYA109 rooftop

This is the closest paid view, from the roof of the MAGNET by SHIBUYA109 building on the crossing. Older guides call it Mag’s Park and describe it as free. It is not free now. After about two months of renovation it reopened on 3 March 2026 as CROSSING VIEW & ROOFTOP LOUNGE MAG8, charging ¥1,800 with one drink. It takes no cash. Children 6 and under get in free with an adult. It kept its “drone photo” selfie camera.

We could not find a 2026 source saying whether any free part of the roof is left, so plan to pay.

Starbucks on QFRONT

The Starbucks on the second floor of the QFRONT building, the one with the big screen, is the famous one. It closed in October 2023 for the Tsutaya rebuild and reopened on 25 April 2024 across the whole second floor. After the refit the seats were set back from the glass, leaving standing room by the window for photos.

In October 2026 the store page lists 7:00 to 22:30, cashless only, Tall drinks only. On Halloween night (Saturday 31 October 2026) it closes at 19:00. Buy a drink and expect to wait your turn at the glass at busy times.

Free views of Shibuya Crossing

Shibuya Hikarie 11F Sky Lobby

Shibuya Hikarie’s 11th-floor lobby is free, open 7:00 to 24:00, and its big windows look over the station towards the crossing and the buildings around SHIBUYA109. It is farther away than the other spots, so bring a zoom lens or accept a wide view. It is the easiest free option at night.

SHIBU NIWA, Tokyu Plaza Shibuya

The rooftop terrace of Tokyu Plaza Shibuya is free from 11:00 to 20:00. Tokyu describes its night view over the Scramble Crossing and the Metropolitan Expressway. It may close for events or bad weather, so it is a fair-weather option.

Shibuya Mark City walkway

The glass walkway between the station and Shibuya Mark City, where Taro Okamoto’s Myth of Tomorrow mural hangs, has long had free windows over the crossing. A 2026 travel guide still lists it. We could not confirm how much of the view is open now that the old Tokyu buildings next door are being demolished, so treat it as a bonus on the way to the mural, not a plan.

Which one should you pick?

  • One view and one ticket for Tokyo as well: SHIBUYA SKY.
  • The crossing itself, close up, with a drink: MAGNET MAG8.
  • No spending: Hikarie 11F, then SHIBU NIWA if it is before 20:00.
  • A coffee and a quick photo: Starbucks QFRONT, early in the morning.

Shibuya Station is in the middle of a rebuild that runs to FY2034, so views, entrances and walkways change. The Shibuya Station guide helps with exits, and things to do in Shibuya covers the rest of the area. For a guided walk that finishes at a lookout in Mark City, see the Shibuya Highlights Walking Tour.

Questions people ask

Where is the best view of Shibuya Crossing?

For the whole crossing seen straight down, the SHIBUYA SKY rooftop on Shibuya Scramble Square, 229 m up, from ¥2,700 online before 15:00. For a closer view where you can see faces and umbrellas, the MAGNET by SHIBUYA109 rooftop at ¥1,800 with a drink. For free, the Shibuya Hikarie 11F Sky Lobby, open 7:00 to 24:00.

Can you see Shibuya Crossing for free?

Yes. The Shibuya Hikarie 11F Sky Lobby is free from 7:00 to 24:00 and looks towards the crossing through large windows. The SHIBU NIWA rooftop terrace at Tokyu Plaza Shibuya is free from 11:00 to 20:00, but may close in bad weather. The walkway to Shibuya Mark City also has windows over the junction.

Can you still watch the crossing from the Starbucks?

Yes. Starbucks Coffee SHIBUYA TSUTAYA 2F, on the second floor of QFRONT, faces the crossing and was open 7:00 to 22:30 when checked in October 2026. It takes no cash and serves only Tall drinks. Since the 2024 refit the seats sit back from the window, so expect to stand for photos.

Is the MAGNET rooftop free?

No. The rooftop on MAGNET by SHIBUYA109, now called CROSSING VIEW and ROOFTOP LOUNGE MAG8, reopened on 3 March 2026 at ¥1,800 including one drink, cashless only. Children 6 and under go free with an adult. Older guides describe a free rooftop; we found no 2026 source showing any free area remains.

Is SHIBUYA SKY worth it just for the crossing?

Only if you also want the skyline. From 229 m the crossing is a small, neat pattern at the foot of the building, and the real reward is the view across the rest of Tokyo. If the crossing is your main goal, the MAGNET rooftop is closer and cheaper, and the free Hikarie lobby is closer to street level.
