Shibuya 109 and MAGNET by Shibuya 109

Shibuya 109 is the silver cylinder where Dogenzaka splits, a fashion building for young women since 1979 with about a hundred shops on ten floors, open 10:00 to 21:00. Across the crossing, MAGNET by Shibuya 109 sells anime goods and has a rooftop crossing view for ¥1,800 with one drink.

Shibuya 109 is the silver cylinder standing where Dogenzaka and Bunkamura-dori meet, across the street from Shibuya Station. It has sold fashion to young women since April 1979: about a hundred shops over ten floors, B2 to 8F, open 10:00 to 21:00 every day except New Year’s Day. Its sister building, MAGNET by Shibuya 109, faces the crossing and has a paid rooftop that looks straight down on it.

It sits on the list of things to do in Shibuya for its history as much as its shops, and it is the best-known address on the Shibuya shopping circuit.

What Shibuya 109 is

Tokyu opened the building in April 1979 as a “Fashion Community”. The architect was Minoru Takeyama. The name is a pun: 10 and 9 read as “to-kyu” in Japanese. It is run today by SHIBUYA109 Entertainment, a Tokyu Group company.

Tokyu first aimed the building at women in their early thirties, to compete with Seibu’s department stores. That plan did not last. By the 1990s 109 had become the centre of gyaru fashion, the youth style that peaked in the 1990s and early 2000s, and Wikipedia describes it as a sanctuary for young women from that subculture. Travel guides now describe its shops as aimed at women in their teens and twenties.

Guides disagree on the exact shop count. The official directory listed 105 entries in October 2026, pop-ups included, so “about a hundred” is fair.

Floor by floor

Checked October 2026, from the official shop list:

Floor Shops listed (examples) Number of entries
B2 BOX CAFE & SPACE, JOHNS ICE CREAM, Marion Crepes, PLAZA 9
B1 ABC-MART GRAND STAGE, ANAP, tax-free counter 18
1F Limited POP UP BRIDGE., Risa Magli, SAMANTHAVEGA 7
2F EMODA, MOUSSY, LUNA EARTH 7
3F PEACH JOHN, EGOIST, evelyn 13
4F SLY, Lattice, OLIVE des OLIVE 11
5F GYDA, rienda, MURUA 11
6F LIZ LISA, merry jenny, Sanrio 14
7F WEGO, SPINNS, Dr.Martens, café Ma Maison 9
8F DISP!!!, EXCEL Colorist 6

Food is spread across the building rather than on one restaurant floor: the cafes and sweet stalls are mostly on B2 and 7F. If you are carrying a suitcase, leave it in a station locker first.

Hours and getting there

Shibuya Station serves the JR Yamanote, Saikyo and Shonan-Shinjuku lines, the Tokyu Toyoko and Den-en-toshi lines, the Ginza, Hanzomon and Fukutoshin metro lines and the Keio Inokashira Line, all listed on 109’s access page. Japan Travel puts the start of Dogenzaka about a minute’s walk from the Hachiko exit, and 109 stands at its foot.

MAGNET by Shibuya 109 and its rooftop

MAGNET is the building facing Shibuya Crossing. It opened with 109 in 1979 as “109-2”, became “109Men’s” in 2011 and took its current name in 2018. Inside, the official floor list runs from a Bandai Namco Cross Store on B1 through souvenirs, character goods, unisex clothes and anime and game shops, up to an entertainment space on 7F.

The reason most visitors go in is the roof. The rooftop lounge, called CROSSING VIEW & ROOFTOP LOUNGE MAG8, closed for about two months of renovation and reopened on 3 March 2026. Older guides call the roof “Mag’s Park” and say it was free. It is not free now.

Checked October 2026, from SHIBUYA109 Entertainment’s press release of 16 February 2026:

MAG8 rooftop Detail
Entry ¥1,800, one drink included (soft drink or alcohol)
Payment Cashless only
Children Accompanied children 6 and under free
Hours 10:00 to 22:00, last entry 21:30
Overhead photo ¥1,500 for 150 seconds on a “sky camera” linked to your phone

Whether any free corner of the roof survived the renovation is not confirmed. Bring a card or a phone wallet either way.

Is it worth ¥1,800? You look down from a low rooftop right above the junction, much closer to the crowds than SHIBUYA SKY’s 229 m deck, and the price includes a drink. SHIBUYA SKY costs ¥2,700 online before 15:00 and gives the wider city view. The best view of Shibuya Crossing guide compares every option, including the free ones.

Shibuya 109 with a guide

109 is easy to do alone. The streets behind it are where a guide helps. The Shibuya Highlights Walking Tour & Secret View Spot starts by Hachiko, crosses the Scramble and works through Center Gai, Nonbei Yokocho, Miyashita Park and a lookout in Mark City in 90 minutes, which gives you your bearings before you come back to shop.

Nearby

Center Gai starts at the crossing, a narrow street of brand shops, fast food and nightlife. Dogenzaka climbs south-west past 109. Shibuya Parco is about five minutes’ walk from the station, with Nintendo TOKYO and Pokemon Center SHIBUYA on its 6th floor. For the whole area, start from the Shibuya Japan homepage.

Questions people ask

What is Shibuya 109 known for?

Shibuya 109 is known as the home of gyaru fashion, the youth style that peaked in the 1990s and early 2000s. Tokyu opened the building in April 1979 and first aimed it at women in their early thirties before it became the centre of gyaru fashion. Today it holds about a hundred shops over ten floors, mostly selling women's fashion.

What time does Shibuya 109 open?

Shibuya 109 opens from 10:00 to 21:00, according to its official website in October 2026. It closes only on New Year's Day. Individual cafes and pop-up shops can keep slightly different hours. MAGNET by Shibuya 109, the sister building across the crossing, keeps the same 10:00 to 21:00 shop hours and also closes on 1 January.

Is the Shibuya 109 rooftop free?

No. The rooftop over the crossing is on MAGNET by Shibuya 109, not the main 109 building. Since it reopened on 3 March 2026, entry costs ¥1,800 including one drink, card or e-money only. Accompanied children aged 6 and under go free. It opens 10:00 to 22:00 with last entry at 21:30.

Can you shop tax-free at Shibuya 109?

Yes. The official shop list shows a tax-free counter on B1. From 1 November 2026 Japan changes the system: you pay the full price in the shop, keep your receipts, and claim the consumption tax back at the airport within 90 days. The ¥5,000 minimum per shop per day stays.

Is Shibuya 109 only for women?

No. Anyone can go in, though most of the fashion labels in the main building sell women's clothes. The basement cafes and ice cream stalls, the 7F shops such as WEGO and Dr.Martens and the Sanrio shop on 6F are not women-only. MAGNET by Shibuya 109 across the crossing has a unisex apparel floor, character goods and anime shops.
