For sightseeing

Shibuya’s sights are close together. The Scramble Crossing, the Hachiko statue and SHIBUYA SKY on top of Scramble Square are all at the station. One stop north is Harajuku, with Takeshita Street and Meiji Shrine, and you can walk there along Cat Street.

Shinjuku’s best free sight is the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building. Its observation decks are free and 202 m above ground, open 9:30 to 22:00 (the north deck closes at 17:30). The south deck closes on the first and third Tuesday of each month, the north deck on the second and fourth Monday (Tokyo Metropolitan Government, checked October 2026). Shinjuku Gyoen, the national garden, closes on Mondays (or the next weekday when Monday is a holiday) and over New Year.

If views are the point, Shinjuku wins on price. SHIBUYA SKY wins on what you see: it looks straight down on the Crossing.

For nightlife

Shinjuku has more nightlife. JNTO describes Kabukicho as having over 4,000 bars, restaurants, clubs and convenience stores, and names Golden Gai as a draw. Omoide Yokocho is a narrow lane of small eateries. Shibuya’s nightlife is more compact: Center Gai, Dogenzaka and the tiny bars of Nonbei Yokocho.

The rules differ. Shibuya bans drinking on the street around the station from 18:00 to 05:00 every night, has banned outdoor smoking ward-wide with ¥2,000 on-the-spot fines, and since 1 April 2025 bans touting on public property. Both districts carry the same warning from the UK government about drink spiking and card fraud, with Kabukicho named as where most British victims were targeted. In either place, ignore street touts and check prices before you sit down.

The Shinjuku Food Tour (13 Dishes and 4 Eateries) is an easy way to see Omoide Yokocho and Kabukicho from a Shibuya base. For Shibuya after dark, see Shibuya at night.

For shopping

Shibuya is the fashion and pop-culture choice: Shibuya 109, Shibuya Parco with Nintendo TOKYO and Pokemon Center SHIBUYA, and the shops of Miyashita Park. Shinjuku is the department-store choice, with flagship Isetan, Takashimaya, Keio and Odakyu stores, plus Kinokuniya books.

From 1 November 2026, tax-free shopping works the same in both: you pay the full price in the shop and claim the consumption tax back at the airport within 90 days, with a ¥5,000 minimum per shop per day.

For transport

From Narita both are Narita Express stops, and the fare is the same: ¥3,330 ordinary or ¥4,100 Green one way. Keio Plaza in Shinjuku gives about 80 minutes; the Tokyu hotels in Shibuya give about 90. Both have direct Airport Limousine Buses, and Keio Plaza runs its own. See Narita to Shibuya and Haneda to Shibuya.

Across Tokyo, Shibuya has one clear edge: the Ginza Line starts here and runs straight to Asakusa. Between the two districts, take the JR Yamanote Line: ¥200 with a ticket or ¥199 by IC card, calculated from JR East’s March 2026 fare table.

One drawback for Shibuya: the station is being rebuilt until FY2034, and gates and passages keep moving. The Shibuya Station guide has the current exits.

Halloween and other big nights

Shibuya is the district that changes most on big nights. For Halloween 2026, Shibuya City closes roads to vehicles around the station from 16:00 on 30 and 31 October, the Hachiko statue is boarded off from 30 October to 1 November, and shops are asked not to sell alcohol on the night of the 31st. Shinjuku has its own Halloween drinking ban in parts of Kabukicho. If you are booking for the last weekend of October and want a quiet night, neither centre is ideal; Ebisu, one stop south of Shibuya, is the quieter base.

Splitting your stay

You do not have to choose one. Harajuku and Yoyogi lie between the two on the Yamanote Line, so a day in Harajuku and Meiji Shrine sits naturally between a Shibuya evening and a Shinjuku one. Moving hotels eats into a day of sightseeing, so on a short trip pick one base and ride the train.

As a base: which hotels

In Shibuya, Shibuya Excel Hotel Tokyu is inside Mark City by the station, with the Narita bus stopping at the building. Hotel Indigo Tokyo Shibuya in Dogenzaka sells rooms that look over the Crossing.

In Shinjuku, Keio Plaza Hotel Tokyo is 5 minutes from the West Exit and runs its own airport buses; it closes entirely from 14:00 on 16 February to 12:00 on 17 February 2027 for an electrical inspection. Hotel Gracery Shinjuku is 5 minutes from the JR East Exit in Kabukicho, with rooms from ¥22,230 a night (checked October 2026, no dates entered).

More Shibuya options by area are in where to stay in Shibuya, and other districts in where to stay in Tokyo.

The verdict

First trip, sightseeing-led, travelling with family: Shibuya. Nights out until late, department-store shopping or a Kabukicho hotel: Shinjuku. If you cannot decide, stay in Shibuya and spend one evening in Shinjuku. The train between them costs ¥200.
