Dogenzaka in Shibuya at dusk, the tree-lined slope with shop lights coming on

Where to stay in Shibuya

First-timers should stay by the station: Shibuya Excel Hotel Tokyu is inside Mark City, a few minutes from every line, with the Narita and Haneda airport buses stopping at the building. Pick Dogenzaka or Miyashita Park for nightlife, Shibuya Stream for a calmer station base, and Cat Street or Ebisu for a splurge.

Stay in the station area if this is your first trip. The best hotels in Shibuya for most visitors are the ones you can reach from the platform without crossing a road: Shibuya Excel Hotel Tokyu is inside Shibuya Mark City, about 120 m in a straight line from the Scramble Crossing, and the airport buses from Narita and Haneda stop at the building. Go west to Dogenzaka for nightlife, south to Shibuya Stream for quieter nights by the same station, and north to Cat Street or one stop south to Ebisu if you want a splurge away from the crowds.

This guide picks the area first and the hotel second, because in Shibuya the side of the station you sleep on decides how your mornings go. The station is mid-rebuild until FY2034, and walking routes change as gates move. The Shibuya Station guide has the current exits.

Which area of Shibuya suits you

Station / Scramble. The blocks around the station itself: Mark City on the west side, Miyamasuzaka on the east, Miyashita Park to the north. You walk out of the hotel and you are at the Crossing, the Hachiko statue and every train line. It is loud and busy late, and it suits first-timers and anyone with big suitcases.

Dogenzaka / Sakuragaoka. The slopes west and south-west of the station. Dogenzaka is the nightlife side of the station. Sakuragaoka, across Route 246, is calmer and has the big Cerulean Tower. Expect construction hoardings on both: two hotels here warn guests about nearby works.

Shibuya Stream / south. The newer towers by the Shibuya River walkway, reached from the JR New South gate. You get the station on the doorstep without the Crossing crowds outside your window.

Harajuku-Omotesando (Cat Street). Cat Street runs between Shibuya and Harajuku. It is about a 5-minute walk from the Shibuya side and closer to Harajuku and Omotesando shopping. Choose it if shopping and design hotels matter more than nightlife.

Ebisu. One Yamanote Line stop south of Shibuya. The Westin at Yebisu Garden Place is a full-service hotel and a quieter base than the station, and the Ebisu guide covers the neighbourhood. You trade the Crossing at your door for a short train ride.

Shinjuku, the alternative base. Shinjuku is three stops north on the Yamanote Line and has more hotels in total. If Shibuya is full or you want Kabukicho nightlife, read Shibuya vs Shinjuku before you book.

The Narita Airport Limousine Bus stops at the building (about 90 minutes by the hotel’s figure; book online in advance, as the front desk does not). This is the first-timer’s pick: about 120 m from the Crossing, and you never need a taxi with luggage. Shibuya Excel Hotel Tokyu on Booking.com

Cerulean Tower Tokyu Hotel (Sakuragaoka)

The big full-service hotel on Route 246 at Sakuragaokacho 26-1, 5 minutes from the JR West Exit or from Mark City. The Narita limousine stops here (about 85 minutes by the hotel’s figure, book ahead), and so does the Haneda bus (about 60 minutes). For families with luggage, that door-to-door bus is the reason to book it. Cerulean Tower Tokyu Hotel on Booking.com

Shibuya Granbell Hotel (Sakuragaoka)

A design-led hotel at Sakuragaokacho 15-17, about 3 minutes from the JR New South gate. Check-in 14:00, check-out 11:00. It is on the quieter side of the station at night, but its own notice warns of construction noise from the station redevelopment, with an end date given as “undetermined”. Wise Owl Hostels Shibuya (Aobadai, Meguro-ku)

The name says Shibuya, but the address is Aobadai 4-9-10 in Meguro-ku, about 1.2 km in a straight line from the Crossing. The hostel lists Ikejiri-Ohashi (Den-en-toshi Line) and Shinsen (Keio Inokashira Line) as its nearest stations; its site does not make clear whether its quoted times to Shibuya are on foot. Rooms include a female six-bed dorm, mixed dorms and private twin, double and family bunk rooms. Its website has not posted news since 2020, but the Booking.com page is live. Two hotels that older guides still list have closed: Hotel Koé Tokyo (January 2022) and Mustard Hotel Shibuya (September 2023).

Rules that affect your stay

Smoking outdoors is banned everywhere in Shibuya ward except at designated smoking areas, heated tobacco included, and patrol officers collect a ¥2,000 fine on the spot. Drinking on the street around the station is banned every night from 18:00 to 05:00. And since 1 April 2025 the ward’s anti-touting ordinance bans touting on public property, with stricter zones around Shibuya and Ebisu stations. The practical rule: do not follow anyone who approaches you on the street into a bar. The Shibuya at night guide covers the rest.

Before your first evening, a short guided walk helps you learn the station’s sides. The Shibuya Highlights Walking Tour & Secret View Spot starts by Hachiko and takes 1.5 hours.

Is it better to stay in Shibuya or Shinjuku?

Both work as a Tokyo base. Both are Narita Express stops with the same fare, and both have direct airport buses. Shibuya is better for the Crossing, Harajuku and the Ginza Line straight to Asakusa. Shinjuku has more hotel choice around Kabukicho and West Shinjuku. Our Shibuya vs Shinjuku guide compares them point by point.

Is Shibuya a good place to stay for families?
