Daikanyama: T-Site, a 1919 house and quiet streets near Shibuya

Daikanyama is a quiet, upmarket neighbourhood one stop from Shibuya on the Tokyu Toyoko Line, 3 minutes for ¥140. Its best-known stop is Daikanyama T-Site, the Tsutaya bookshop complex open 7:00 to 23:00. Add the Kyu Asakura House, a 1919 wooden mansion with a garden, for a slow afternoon that ends in Nakameguro or Ebisu.

Daikanyama is one stop from Shibuya on the Tokyu Toyoko Line: about 3 minutes by local train for ¥140. It is a quiet, low-rise part of Shibuya ward with small shops and two good reasons to come: Daikanyama T-Site, the Tsutaya bookshop complex, and the Kyu Asakura House, a wooden mansion from 1919.

Treat it as a slow afternoon rather than a sightseeing list. It sits between Shibuya, Ebisu and Nakameguro, so you can walk on to either afterwards.

Daikanyama T-Site

Daikanyama T-Site is a bookshop complex built for Tsutaya, the Japanese book, music and film chain. Klein Dytham architecture won the design in a two-stage invited competition. The result is three low pavilions set among old trees and linked on the first floor by a “magazine street”, with facades made of interlocking T shapes that echo the Tsutaya logo. It won the World’s Best Shopping Centre award at the World Architecture Festival in 2012. The competition behind it was a big one: 77 architects were invited, and the finalists included Kengo Kuma and Atelier Bow Wow.

Kyu Asakura House

The Kyu Asakura House (旧朝倉家住宅) is a wooden house with a garden, built in 1919 and now an Important Cultural Property run by Shibuya City. It was built as the family home of Torajiro Asakura, who chaired the Tokyo prefectural assembly and the Shibuya ward assembly, according to a city-supervised guide. It is a short walk from the station and a sharp contrast to the modern shops around it.

Shopping in Daikanyama

Daikanyama’s shops are mostly designer boutiques and concept stores, with small thrift shops in the back alleys, according to local guides. It is a place for browsing on quiet, tree-lined streets, not for big-name stores. For those, go back to Shibuya shopping.

For a view, local guides point to Saigoyama Park, a hilltop park nearby with views over the city.

A slow afternoon in Daikanyama

  1. Take the Toyoko Line from Shibuya to Daikanyama.
  2. Visit the Kyu Asakura House before its last entry.
  3. Spend an hour in Daikanyama T-Site, with a coffee.
  4. Walk south to Nakameguro and the Meguro River, or east to Ebisu for dinner and Ebisu Yokocho.

Practical tips

  • Opening days: the Kyu Asakura House closes on Mondays, and T-Site closes only on 1 January, so avoid a Monday if you want both.
  • Litter: Daikanyama is in Shibuya ward. Since 1 June 2026, Shibuya ward patrol staff can fine anyone they see littering ¥2,000 on the spot, payable cashless.
  • Getting on: from Daikanyama it is 3 minutes back to Shibuya on the Toyoko Line, or a short walk to Ebisu Station for the Yamanote Line.
