A Mount Fuji day trip from Tokyo works best as a visit to Lake Kawaguchiko and the Chureito Pagoda. Direct highway buses leave Shibuya Mark City from 6:05 and take about two hours for ¥2,300 (October 2026). Coach tours start at $50. Go between November and February, when the mountain is most often clear.
Yes, a Mount Fuji day trip from Tokyo is easy, and from Shibuya you can do it without changing once. A direct highway bus leaves the Shibuya Mark City bus terminal at 6:05 and reaches Kawaguchiko Station at 8:05, for ¥2,300 one way (October 2026). From there you have Lake Kawaguchiko, the Chureito Pagoda and the classic view of the mountain. Coach tours cover the same area from $50.
The bigger question is whether you will see the mountain at all. Fuji hides in cloud on most summer days. Plan for November to February if you can, and leave early whatever the season.

The Shibuya bus is the one to know about if you are staying near the station. Fujikyu raised the route from 9 to 11 round trips a day on 1 July 2026, and added a 19:00 departure on specified days. All seats are reserved, and booking opens one month ahead on highwaybus.com or through Fujikyu’s call centre.
Shibuya to Kawaguchiko bus times
From the Fujikyu timetable valid from 1 July 2026, checked October 2026. Some buses stop at Futako-Tamagawa and Gotemba, so they take longer.

For a day trip, take one of the first two buses. Fuji is most often clear early in the day, and a 6:05 or 6:40 departure gives you the morning there.
The Shinjuku bus leaves from Busta Shinjuku, above the south exit. From 1 October 2026 Fujikyu sells its own Shinjuku buses on a new site, Fujiyama Connect, while Keio’s buses stay on highwaybus.com. Cancel on the site you booked with.
The Fuji Excursion train from Shinjuku
The train costs nearly twice the bus, but it avoids the expressway and stops at Shimoyoshida, the station for the pagoda. Weekday times from Fujikyu Railway’s timetable valid from 14 March 2026, checked October 2026:

A Japan Rail Pass covers only the JR part as far as Otsuki; the Fujikyu section is paid separately.
Tour or independent?
Independent is cheaper and freer. The return bus from Shibuya costs ¥4,200 to ¥4,600, and you choose how long to stay at each place. If the summit is out at 9:00, you can head straight for the pagoda while the view lasts.
A tour makes sense in two cases. First, if you want to cover several spots spread around the lakes in one day: the most-reviewed tour on GetYourGuide stops at Lake Yamanaka, the Oshino Hakkai springs, Oishi Park, the Lawson and clock-shop street photo spots in Kawaguchiko, and the pagoda view at Arakurayama Sengen Park. Doing all of that alone by local bus and train would need careful planning. Second, if you want Hakone as well, since one coach tour pairs Lake Ashi and the Owakudani ropeway with a Fuji stop.
For the first case, the Mt Fuji, Oishi Park, Lake Kawaguchi and Oshino Hakkai tour costs from $50 and had 6,404 reviews in October 2026. Pickup is at set points, not hotels.
The trade-off: a coach day runs to a fixed timetable, so you get the time each stop is allotted, whatever the weather.
Chureito Pagoda
This is the postcard view: a red five-storey pagoda on a hillside with Fuji behind it. The pagoda stands in Arakurayama Sengen Park in Fujiyoshida, above the Arakura Fuji Sengen Shrine. It was built in 1962 as the city’s war memorial.
Getting there:
- By train: the Fuji Excursion stops at Shimoyoshida. On weekdays the 7:30 from Shinjuku arrives at 9:13.
- From Kawaguchiko: Shimoyoshida is three stops back along the Fujikyu line, after Fuji-Q Highland and Mt. Fuji stations.
- On foot: Fujiyoshida’s official guide gives about 25 minutes from Shimoyoshida Station to the pagoda, including 398 steps from the shrine to the viewing deck.
The park is open 24 hours and there is no entry fee listed. The city asks visitors not to drive up to the plaza in front of the pagoda or to stop in the residential streets around it. In October and November the pagoda is lit from 17:00 to 21:50.
Lake Kawaguchiko
Kawaguchiko Station is where the Shibuya and Shinjuku buses and the Fuji Excursion all end, so it makes a natural base for the day.
One easy add-on is the Mt. Fuji Panoramic Ropeway near the lake. From 1 November 2026 an adult return ticket costs ¥1,200, and the ropeway closes for inspection from 7 to 18 December 2026.
When you will actually see Fuji
The best data we found comes from Fuji City in Shizuoka, which records whether the mountain is visible at 8:00 every day. It is on the other side of the mountain from Kawaguchiko, so read it as a seasonal pattern rather than a forecast for the lake.

Over 2025 the mountain was fully visible on 136 mornings, 37 percent of the year. In June, the rainy season, it was clear on two. Our best time to visit Tokyo guide has the Tokyo weather month by month.
Two habits help. Check a live camera or the forecast the night before and keep the bus booking flexible if you can. And go early: Fuji City records the view at 8:00 because that is the time of day the mountain is most likely to be visible.
A one-day plan from Shibuya
- 6:40 bus from Shibuya Mark City, arriving at Kawaguchiko at 8:40.
- Fujikyu train three stops back to Shimoyoshida, then the climb to the Chureito Pagoda while the morning is clear.
- Back to Kawaguchiko for lunch and the lakeshore.
- 17:40 bus from Kawaguchiko, back at Shibuya Mark City at 20:30, in time for dinner around Shibuya.
Train fares on the Fujikyu line are not included above; check them at the station.
Our picks: Mount Fuji tours
The two tours in our list are ranked above. The Kawaguchiko tour suits most first-time visitors because it includes the pagoda view. The Hakone tour suits travellers who want Lake Ashi and the Owakudani ropeway too, at the cost of less time around Fuji itself; it meets at Tokyo Station at 7:30 or in Shinjuku at 8:00.
How we picked
We compared Mount Fuji day tours from Tokyo listed on GetYourGuide on 23 October 2026. We kept tours with thousands of verified reviews and a clear itinerary, and checked where each one meets and whether the stops match the title. We left out listings filed under the wrong city, listings with prices that looked wrong, and tours whose stops did not match their titles.
